Why This Song Exists
I originally began writing Familiar in the summer of 2023. My family and I were back in my home state, visiting relatives, and — as I often do when I drive through Louisiana — I found myself reflecting.
During that trip, we spent time in a city I hadn’t visited since college. Standing there again, it was fascinating to realize just how much my life had changed since the last time I had been there. So much of it felt familiar — the roads, the memories, the atmosphere — but my reality and the direction of my life were completely different.
In that moment, I was overwhelmed with gratitude. Gratitude for God’s faithfulness and for my wife — for the way my life had been shaped, protected, and redirected in ways I never could have planned on my own.
What I wanted to capture in this song was that feeling of gratitude — the kind that comes from being fully known and still fully loved.
Familiar is dedicated to God and to my wife.
